They Moved My Cheese Again

It never fails. You get used to something one way and it changes.

Today was the day of changes. First my brother calls, informing me that they can't get to the website. Turns out, my web host had changed the server's IP address without bothering to tell me. I submitted an online support ticket and got the following response:

-----------------------
Hello,

This is because we are having urgent changing of our IP addresses and that cause the problem. After the dns changes are finished your site will be back online. The new ip address for your server is 206.212.247.132. Please excuse us for the inconvenience.

Best Regards,
Support Team

Um, what the heck is an 'urgent changing'? These kinds of things don't generally happen 'urgently' unless there's something financially wrong. I guess I should probably back everything up just in case... Of course since I run my OWN DNS servers, it never would have updated, so my site would have been permanently down. Thankfully I can update DNS fast, so within 15 minutes of knowing what the new IP address was I was back online. Of course if they had warned me this would be happening in advance, we could have saved a lot of headache.

Next, I had to update my MythTV software. Zap2it stopped providing the TV listings, and I needed to update the software to be able to use the new source. Afterwards, my remote didn't work in Myth, but still continued to work for mplayer. Turns out, MythTV moved the location of the lirc configuration file from ~/.lircrc to ~/.mythtv/lircrc so it wasn't finding it's remote configuration.

That's always my luck, and that's why I rarely update software that works properly. I figure, why break it if it already works?
