What the heck?
It goes like this. Under Firefox 1.x I could click on a link to download a PDF file. A dialog opens basically asking 'Do you want to save this file or open it with Acroread?' I would open it directly into Acrobat Reader - not embedded in the browser.
I upgraded to 2.0 and my only option now is to save the file. And, to top it off, you can't even edit the configurations within Firefox to change how it behaves with files it doesn't like - oh if one is already registered you can change what it does, but you can't add new associations, and I don't have a 'pdf' association. So without learning how to edit the mimeTypes.rdf file you're basically screwed. I'm better off running IE6 for Linux (yes, I have that) than I am running Firefox 2.0 natively.
I found a bug report about it in the Mozilla bug tracker, and basically they say 'It's a feature, not a bug. Go away.' In fact, here's a quote:
'Also, when people talk about features in the UI, it'd be helpful if people thought of the context in which they were using a feature, and what they were trying to do, before insisting that a particular piece of UI is implemeted.'
What the heck? We don't want a NEW piece of UI implemented, we just want control back that we've had forever! Why would you take away the 'Open file with...' dialog??? Don't you guys realize your grandmother will never use software that has a UI this poorly implemented? Or are you just waiting for her to die to increase market percentage?
