Viewsonic G Tablet Issues

Media outlets are reporting Manufacturing Problems with the Viewsonic G Android Tablet.

Some blame it on the nVidia video card chipset.

As one familiar with the device I can say pretty solidly there's nothing wrong with the hardware. It's the darn custom overlay that Viewsonic added to the tablet that seriously hampers the device.

Simply installing a different software pack that removes their home screen replacement results in a very speedy device.

In fact, scanning the developer forums for the real geeks who would know, there's been no actual hardware problems to speak of.

If only they had left the stock Android interface on it, they wouldn't be having these problems.

UPDATE: Post from the Viewsonic VP of Marketing on a forum I frequent:

We will get s/w update out ASAP. We're also releasing the kernel this week.
The gTablet should NEVER have been pulled.
Are working with Staples to address this.

Why NotionInk Adam Will Fail

The NotionInk Adam Android Tablet looks like it's going to be the greatest thing since sliced bread. The hardware is certainly nice, and the interface looks slick, but I've been wondering why other vendors haven't produced a better tablet. It's not like the hardware components aren't readily available. You'd think that by now a company that's NOT a startup would have been able to produce something as good or better.

Then I saw This Article about Android os release "Honeycomb". Part of NotionInk's problem is that they've spent as much time developing new software to make apps work right on a larger tablet format as they have their hardware.

Unfortunately by the time the next release of Android comes out, all of their software development will be for naught. While consumers are begging for a good Android tablet, the OS just hasn't been ready for large format. As an Android developer I can attest to that.

I think most manufacturers are smart enough to not sink millions into developing hacks on top of Android when if they just wait another 8 months they will get it all for free from Google.

Installing Ubuntu on the Archos 9 Tablet

Why bother with a locked-in iPad if you're a true technohead, when you can install Ubuntu on the Archos 9 Internet Tablet? The Archos 9 has several flaws, mostly surrounding the installed software. People say it's slow, but really with something other than "Windows Starter" it's actually pretty peppy. The internal hard drive is a bit slow, so I replaced mine with an SSD so I don't have to worry about a physically spinning drive anymore in my hands, and I get better performance.

Installing Ubuntu on it isn't for the weak kneed, but it's not that tough either. Here's a step by step to get you up and running.

Healthcare Tablet PC Use

Chris Thorman over at Software Advice has posted a survey about tablet use in the Healthcare industry.

It will be interesting to see the results of it.
